I always looked forward to the first day of school because all the girls had new shoes. I remember one year I got to homeroom early and was the only one there. The next person to walk in was Denise. She was wearing a thin white sweater, black and white houndstooth pants, thick white slouch socks and black penny loafers with a dazzling shine. She looked terrific and I had a hard time taking my eyes off her shiny shoes. I thought maybe it was me, but a few minutes later a couple of girls walked in and noticed them too. "Hey Denny," they asked, "Where did you get those loafers. Mine don't shine like that. Did you polish them?" No, she said they came out of the box that way. They were Tom McCanns. I don't think anyone believed her. Anyway I figured those shoes would stay on pretty well with those thick socks. When the bell rand, I walked behind Denny and those loafers were glued to her feet. A few days later she wore them again with the thick socks. This time I noticed a slight jiggle as the shoe popped up and down about a quarter inch as she walked. I wanted to follow her from homeroom to her first class, but I figured it would be too obvious. The real treat came about two weeks later when Denny wore her loafers with thin white trouser socks. Now both shoes were slipping with abandon with every step she took. Her heel would slip halfway to 3/4's of the way out, then the shoes would jump back on. When her heel hit the floor, a wave of tension ran down the inside of each shoe as it bowed out away from her arches. Then that wave got to the heel and the shoes slipped. It was a joy to watch. Then Denny went back to the thick socks, but also began working on the back of the right shoe. She'd slip her foot out then jam her heel down onto the back of the shoe. After a few weeks the back of the right shoe was crushed like an accordion. Her foot slipped completely out of this shoe every step. She even lost it now and then. The left loafer continued to slip, even with the thick socks. Eventually, from being kicked off and slid around the floor, both loafers no longer looked anything like they did when they were new. The backs of both were crushed. Both slipped completely off with each step. The penny strap on the right shoe was tearing loose from all that shoeplay and the stitching around the toes was tearing open in small gaps on both shoes. The finish was scuffed almost completely off the front and sides of both shoes. Then one sad day, Denny stopped wearing them. They were replaced with a pair of black skimmers.
